As part of Kilkenny Arts Office’s community arts and climate action 2024 programme we continued to deliver Waste Not Want Not. This year’s programme is a natural progression and development of our 2023 programme. Community arts projects such as this play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life in communities, fostering a sense of belonging and creativity, and promoting positive social change. Their impact extends beyond the artistic realm and contributes to the well-being and development of individuals and society as a whole.
Community Sampler
The Community Embroidery Sampler Project is a particularly strong example of community collaboration and reaps all the benefits of creativity and community making. A project such as this:
- celebrates and preserves the cultural heritage of a community, helping to foster a sense of identity and pride, a sharing of cultural traditions and stories.
- can facilitate cultural exchange and understanding between different communities, helping to bridge cultural divides
- These projects often bring people of different generations together, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding among community members of all ages.
- Skill development. Participants can acquire and enhance a wide range of skills.
- The project will involve collaboration and engagement with local communities and individuals leading to increased civic participation.
- provide an opportunity for individuals from various backgrounds and abilities to come together, promoting inclusivity and social cohesion.
The community sampler will continue to travel to a variety of communities across Kilkenny and public locations to draw in and engage a diverse cross section of the community.
