Course Outline
In this five-week course, Ken will use well-known stories to explore the relationship between character development and story structure. He will explore the natural patterns that underlie storytelling in all its forms, in fiction, fairy-tales, and novels, and in scripts for the stage and screen. He will show how structure and character are formed by the elements of time, place, physical activity, mental activity, and emotional process. Throughout the five weeks, participants will be encouraged to experiment with their approach to structure and character as they pursue their own artistic goals.
Ken Bourke has had plays produced by theatre companies all over Ireland, as well as writing for television and creating feature articles for newspapers and magazines.
In Kilkenny, Barnstorm Theatre Company has produced his plays Wild Harvest, The Comer Story, The Ballad of Rory Roe, and Little Rudolf. Also in Kilkenny, his play The Lost Prince was produced by Equinox Theatre Company, and he has worked with Barnstorm and Devious Theatre Company as script-editor on a number of projects. He is an experienced group-facilitator and a member of the Writers-in-Schools Scheme. He has hosted workshops in various aspects of creative writing under the auspices of arts organisations around Ireland.
