Kilkenny Arts Office is a local authority partner on the Irish Theatre Institute’s Six in the Attic artist development programme, designed to provide theatre makers with the time, space, and resources to create and develop new work. Established in 2011, the initiative supports a dynamic community of playwrights and theatre artists, encouraging them to engage, experiment, collaborate, and refine their ideas. Over the years, many participants have gone on to achieve significant success, including producing new work, winning awards, and establishing their own theatre companies. The programme offers a carefully structured range of supports. Artists take part in regular gatherings, both online and in person, fostering a strong peer network. Professional development workshops help build key skills for freelance practice, while introductions to national and international artists and organisations expand professional connections. Participants also benefit from one-to-one mentoring with ITI’s Director and Programme Manager. Through this comprehensive approach, Six in the Attic empowers artists to realise their creative ambitions, strengthen their practice, and progress their careers within the theatre sector.
