Repair to Care Day – Saturday October 19th 2024 & Aftermath

REPAIR TO CARE October 19th, the aftermath….

The day was a rich and rewarding day on so many levels and we feel that the best way to illustrate its success is through some of the wonderful feedback we received and photographs…

Ailis – It was a fantastic day, so well organised and ran so smoothly. I thoroughly enjoyed the event from start to finish! To say I came away enriched is an understatement!

I really enjoyed being with like-minded people, who want to find an alternative to throw away culture and learn the skills that previous generations used. So many people spoke to me about remembering their parents or grandparents repairing clothes but that in more recent times, it was easier to buy new than repair and that the skills their parents/grandparents had in repairing had not been passed on to them. I felt people were very aware of the loss of that knowledge and are keen to learn practical mending and repairing skills.

Claire Downeys presentation (Rediscovery Centre) was so informative, following the before, during and after cycle of clothes and fibres. I think it was a real eye opener for many.

The essay by Lynn Buckle, as read by Alice Bennett was also very moving and thought provoking.

I was stationed at the Embroidery table, which was continuously busy during the event as it was a hands-on learning experience, embroidery is a slow process even for experienced stitchers. I liked that people came and went, did some embroidery, went around to the other tables and for the most part the participants came back and picked up where they left off. It was nice that they could take the fabric out of the hoop and take it home to continue the piece in their own time. I think the participants enjoyed the embroidery station and many were surprised by how fast time went and how engrossed they got in the process.

Jacqui  – The day was such a joy. From meeting like-minded individuals, to chatting, teaching, listening and learning. My cup was truly filled by the time I was packing to leave.

Kay – Saturday was a wonderful happy day from beginning to end, so much going on at each table, some more busy then others, embroidery for example.

The talk on recycled clothes and the environment was so informative, also the slide show.

Ann – Thank you so much for including me in the Repair to Care day, it was brilliant. I loved the whole concept to the day and was delighted to see so many People turning up, including a few Men.

Noreen Attendances and participants were both male and female, from the very young trying their hand at embroidery to the not so young having a go at repairing items of clothing.

I thought the day went very well overall.
There was nothing I didn’t enjoy.
I was amazed when I met the 74-year-old man trying to repair his trousers. I regret not getting to see how he got on, as I got caught up with a 74-year-old lady who was there to repair the zip in her grandson’s coat.

LisaI felt the day overall went really well, the things I enjoyed were the atmosphere and getting to talk to different people about the items they brought and why they wanted to repair or adjust them. I also enjoyed showing them how they could do it themselves.

Friederike I think the repair day was a great success, it would be fantastic if there were more of those days, I know it was a big task to organise it all, but as you know people need to see it on a regular basis for it to sink in.

They could be smaller overall with one of the highlight crafts as a workshop on the side, embroidery, sashiko, crocheting, darning….

I think the sewing machines were essential and Mary, I can’t think of her second name, is a wizard, could fix anything.

I really enjoyed being part of it, I think having coffee and tea for the participants would be good too.

Your embroidery table is out of this world, I didn’t get a go, hopefully another time.

Sandra I really enjoyed the day from start to finish, I thought the atmosphere was very welcoming. The talk from recreate was very informative. And there was so much to see and try out
